NORTHGATE PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

Seattle, WA

City of Seattle Dept. of Transportation

Connecting the Community

This project included the design of the John Lewis Memorial Bridge, a pedestrian and bicycle bridge over I-5 to improve connections within the Northgate community. The bridge connects the campus of North Seattle College west of I-5 to the King County Transit Center and the new Sound Transit Light Rail station on the east side of I-5.

The bridge improves access to communities, services, and opportunities on the east and west sides of I-5 in Northgate and Licton Springs, helping to connect a historically divided area by bringing together the neighborhood's thriving job and retail centers with the rest of the city and region.

The video below shows the placement of the bridge girders over I-5 during a weekend freeway closure.

What CM Design Group Did

CM Design Group was responsible for the civil design elements including the landings on both sides of the bridge, a shared use path on the west side of 1st Avenue NE between NE 100th Street and NE 103rd Street and connections to NE 100th Street and pedestrian trails on the North Seattle College campus (west landing of bridge), including channelization modifications and crosswalk improvements. CM Design Group also prepared traffic control plans and right-of way documents.
